Overview
Trading 212 is a UK-headquartered broker founded in 2004. It offers two distinct services through one proprietary platform. Invest, Stocks ISA, and SIPP accounts are used to buy and own supported securities. The CFD account is used to trade price movements with leverage without owning the underlying asset.
The investment accounts charge no trading commission, custody fee, or inactivity fee. Currency conversion normally costs 0.15%, while Trading 212 AU Invest uses a 0.4% rate. CFD trades have no commission, but they include floating spreads, a 0.5% FX fee on applicable closed results, and overnight interest. The broker reports that 77% of its retail CFD accounts lose money.
Web, Android, and iOS access is available. Investing tools include fractional orders, Pies, AutoInvest, multi-currency balances, and a Public API for eligible Invest and Stocks ISA accounts. The service does not support MetaTrader, a broker-hosted VPS, automatic copying of live trades, or a dedicated Islamic account. Available products and protections depend on the client's country and assigned legal entity.

How we test Brokers ?
Trust and Safety
Trading 212 operates through several regulated companies. The legal entity assigned to an account depends on the client's country of residence. This matters because compensation limits, account types, and product rules differ between entities.
Client cash and securities are held separately from company funds. Shares are held in segregated custody arrangements, including arrangements with Interactive Brokers. Segregation protects ownership records, but it does not protect an investment from falling market prices.
Fees and Commissions
Trading Commission
Trading 212 charges no trading commission on Invest, Stocks ISA, SIPP, or CFD orders. It also charges no custody fee. Exchange fees and taxes still apply where required. For example, purchases of eligible London-listed shares attract 0.5% Stamp Duty Reserve Tax, and a PTM levy of GBP 1.50 applies on qualifying London Stock Exchange orders above GBP 10,000.
Currency Conversion Fee
Eligible clients can hold supported currencies and buy an asset from a matching balance, avoiding conversion on that transaction. Currency availability depends on location and account type.
Spreads
CFD spreads are floating. They widen or narrow with market liquidity, volatility, and the instrument. The weighted average spreads are 1.5 pips for EUR/USD, 2.6 pips for GBP/USD, 1.75 points for XAU/USD, and 0.49 points for the S&P 500 CFD.
Overnight Interest
CFD positions held beyond the daily cutoff incur overnight interest. The amount can be positive or negative depending on the instrument, trade direction, and current financing rate. Invest, ISA, and SIPP positions do not use CFD overnight financing.
Deposit Fee
Bank transfers and instant bank transfers are free. Card payments, Apple Pay, Google Pay, OpenBankingPL, and Klarna, formerly Sofort, are free until cumulative deposits into an Invest or ISA account reach 2,000 GBP or EUR. A 0.7% fee applies after that limit. Deposits into CFD accounts remain free.
Withdrawal Fee
Trading 212 charges no withdrawal-processing fee. A receiving or intermediary bank can charge its own payment fee.
Deposits and Withdrawals
Deposit Methods
Deposit methods depend on the client's country, legal entity, and account type. Available options include bank or wire transfer, instant bank transfer, Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Klarna, formerly Sofort. Region-specific methods include iDEAL, BLIK, Carte Bancaire, OnlineBankingPL, and Direct eBanking.
Funds must come from a personal bank account or payment card held in the client's name. American Express and PayPal are not accepted, and clients registered with Trading 212 UK Ltd. cannot use credit cards. Cash ISA deposits are limited to bank transfers and instant bank transfers. The deposit screen shows the methods and any applicable charge before confirmation.
Withdrawal Methods
Withdrawals generally return funds to a verified payment method. Supported methods include Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, and bank or wire transfer. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Sofort are deposit methods rather than standard withdrawal methods. Trading 212 can require payment-method verification before releasing funds.
Deposit Processing Time
Card deposits normally reach the account in less than 10 minutes. An instant bank transfer is generally credited within minutes when it is started through the Trading 212 app. A standard bank transfer can take up to 3 business days and is normally not processed on weekends or bank holidays.
Trading 212 sends an email and an in-app notification after the funds are credited. Bank checks, payment-provider reviews, an incorrect payment reference, or a transfer from an account that is not held in the client's name can delay or prevent processing.
Withdrawal Processing Time
SEPA Instant, Faster Payments, and eligible card payouts use the fastest available route, but the receiving bank or card provider determines when the funds are credited. A standard GBP or EUR bank payment normally arrives on the next business day when instant payment rails are unavailable.
SWIFT transfers and some card payouts normally take 2 to 3 business days. These timeframes exclude additional delays caused by weekends, public holidays, intermediary-bank checks, payment-method verification, or reviews by the receiving provider. The withdrawal tracker in the app shows the current status and payment method.

Tradable Instruments
Stocks and ETFs
Invest, Stocks ISA, and SIPP accounts provide ordinary shares, preferred shares, ETFs, ETPs, ETCs, REITs, and investment trusts. The broker reports more than 13,000 global stocks and ETFs, including fractional orders.
Stock CFDs are also available and use the retail leverage cap shown below. A CFD position does not provide voting rights or ownership of the share.
Forex
The CFD account provides more than 180 forex pairs with 24/5 trading. Major and minor pairs have different leverage limits, listed below. The minimum trade size is 0.001 lots. Spreads are floating, and a 0.5% FX fee applies to a closed result when conversion is required.
Indices
Index and index-futures CFDs cover major and minor global markets. Major indices receive a higher retail leverage limit than minor indices.
Commodities
Commodity CFDs include gold, silver, oil, and agricultural markets. Gold and other commodities use separate leverage limits.
Cryptocurrencies
Crypto access depends on the legal entity and account type. Selected European entities provide crypto CFDs, which have the lowest retail leverage cap in the table. A separate Crypto account is limited to supported regions. UK Invest and ISA rules for crypto-linked exchange-traded notes remain account-specific.
Leverage and Margin Restrictions
Professional status requires evidence of trading experience, transaction frequency, and portfolio size. It also removes some retail protections. The highest leverage is not the necessarily appropriate for a beginner. Position size, free margin, and stop placement remain more important than the maximum ratio.
Hedging mode is available for CFDs, allowing long and short exposure on the same instrument. Invest and ISA accounts are long-only accounts, so they do not support direct short selling. News trading is allowed, although gaps, slippage, and wider spreads increase execution risk during major releases.
Scalping is prohibited under Trading 212's risk policy in defined circumstances. The broker describes scalping as opening and closing positions within a very short period, normally five minutes or less. Traders should not treat the platform as a high-frequency scalping venue.
Trading Platforms and Tools
3.9/5
Web Platform
The proprietary web app runs in a desktop browser and uses the same account structure as the mobile apps. Order tickets show estimated costs before submission. There is no MetaTrader or cTrader connection.
Android and iOS Apps
The Android and iOS apps provide account management, payments, charting, watchlists, alerts, portfolio analysis, and order placement.
Charts and Order Tools
Charting includes TradingView-powered tools, more than 100 indicators, drawing tools, price alerts, and instrument details. Supported order types include market, limit, stop, and stop-limit orders. Selected US shares support 24/5 trading across pre-market, regular, after-hours, and overnight sessions.
Pies and AutoInvest
A Pie divides a portfolio into target slices. AutoInvest can add money on a schedule and direct it toward those weights. Pies are available in supported Invest, ISA, and SIPP settings, not in the CFD account.
Social Pies and Community
The Pie Library lets a client copy another user's asset allocation. The copied Pie remains under the client's control. Future changes from the original creator trigger a notification, and the client chooses whether to accept them. This is portfolio copying, not automatic mirroring of each live trade.
Public API
Eligible General Invest and Stocks ISA accounts can submit market orders and three conditional types through the Public API: limit, stop, and stop-limit. Live and practice environments are supported; CFDs are excluded.
VPS and Automated Trading
Trading 212 does not provide a VPS. The proprietary platform also does not support MetaTrader expert advisors. Automated workflows use the supported Public API and an external server managed by the trader.
Account Opening and Fees
Invest Account
The Invest account is used to buy shares, ETFs, and other supported securities. It does not provide leverage or direct short selling.
Stocks and Shares ISA
The Stocks and Shares ISA is available to eligible UK clients for investing under ISA tax rules. Annual contribution limits and other ISA conditions apply.
Cash ISA
The Cash ISA is available to eligible UK clients for holding cash under ISA tax rules. Funding is limited to supported bank-transfer methods, and UK ISA limits apply.
SIPP
The SIPP is a UK pension account for investing in stocks, ETFs, and ready-made Pies. Pension access and transfer rules apply, and some complex instruments are excluded.
CFD Account
The CFD account supports leveraged long and short trading without ownership of the underlying asset. Appropriateness checks, margin requirements, spreads, and overnight interest apply.
Professional CFD Account
The Professional CFD account provides higher leverage to clients who meet the eligibility criteria and submit the required evidence. Some protections provided to retail clients are reduced.
Crypto Account
The Crypto account is used to buy and sell supported digital assets. Availability is limited to selected legal entities and countries.
Opening Process
- Check eligibility: The applicant must be at least 18, live in a supported country, and have a valid taxpayer identification number.
- Create the profile: Enter an email address, password, personal details, residential address, and tax information.
- Complete KYC: Upload a valid government-issued photo ID and complete a motion selfie. Proof of address can also be requested.
- Select an account: Choose from the account types available for the assigned legal entity and jurisdiction.
- Complete product checks: CFD and complex product access require knowledge and appropriateness questions.
- Fund the account: Use a payment method in the account holder's name and meet the transaction minimum shown in the app.
Customer Support
Customer support is available 24/7. The main channels are the Contact Us button inside the app and the official online contact form. General email contact is available at [email protected], while partnership inquiries use [email protected]. There is no standard public telephone support line.
The website advertises an average response time of 29 seconds for support, but queue time changes with demand and case complexity. Account-security requests, payment tracing, and compliance checks take longer than basic platform questions. Support is primarily delivered in English, while the website and app offer a wider set of interface languages.
Market Research
The platform includes a financial newsfeed, instrument pages, watchlists, price alerts, portfolio charts, and extended-hours market data.
AI Analysis processes recent price movements, news, sentiment, and company metrics into short summaries. It is not a trade signal. Technical research uses the platform's TradingView-powered charts, indicators, drawing tools, and alerts. Custom indicators, expert advisors, and direct third-party plug-ins are not supported.
Learn
The Learn Center covers Investing 101, stock and ETF investing, diversification, dividends, financial statements, forex, leverage, margin, short selling, technical indicators, and trading terminology.
The CFD section explains contracts for difference, forex trading, margin, RSI, MACD, Fibonacci retracement, and order risk. The practice account can be used for order-entry and margin testing before a leveraged live trade.
Bonuses and Promotions
Deposit Bonus
Trading 212 does not provide a permanent flat cash deposit bonus. Time-limited Cash ISA campaigns can add a promotional rate above the standard tracker rate. A typical campaign requires UK residence, no previous Trading 212 account, an eligible affiliate link, and funding of at least $1 equivalent within 10 calendar days.
No-Deposit Bonus
There is no standard no-deposit bonus. Reward campaigns require the stated eligibility steps, which normally include identity verification and a qualifying account action.
Welcome Bonus
Eligible new clients can receive a cash reward or a fractional share through a valid promotion. Reward-share campaigns commonly allocate a value from $8 to $100. Eligibility depends on country, account type, campaign period, and the use of a valid link or code. A qualifying deposit and completed identity verification are required. Rewards are normally allocated within 3 business days after all conditions are met.
Referral and Loyalty Offers
Trading 212 has no traditional points-based loyalty program. Eligible Invest and Stocks ISA clients can receive Invite a Friend links during active campaigns. Both participants can receive a fractional share after meeting the campaign rules. Only one promotion or campaign can be used at a time.
Affiliate Program
The affiliate program is available to content creators and media outlets focused on personal finance, investing, or stock-market coverage. Applications are handled through live chat or [email protected]. Acceptance is selective and limited to relevant publishers.
Trading Contests
Trading 212 does not run standard trading contests. Its promotions focus on reward shares, referrals, Cash ISA rates, and selected card offers.
Final Verdict
Trading 212's suitability depends on how closely its proprietary platform and locally available accounts match the client's requirements. The assigned legal entity determines access to products, protections, funding methods, and tax wrappers, so these factors should be confirmed before registration.
Investment accounts and CFDs are fundamentally different products, not interchangeable routes to the same outcome. One provides ownership of eligible securities; the other uses leverage and carries a higher risk of loss. The choice should be based on the product structure and restrictions rather than the convenience of using a single platform.
FAQ
Does Trading 212 offer copy trading?
Trading 212 supports Social Pies, which copy a portfolio allocation. It does not automatically copy each live trade from another trader. The client keeps control over the copied Pie and chooses whether to accept later changes.
Can scalpers use Trading 212?
Trading 212 prohibits scalping under its risk policy in defined circumstances. It is not designed as a high-frequency scalping venue.
Does Trading 212 offer an Islamic account?
No dedicated swap-free Islamic account is available. Clients can turn off interest on uninvested cash, but that does not convert the CFD account into a Shariah-compliant product.
Is Trading 212 available in the United States or Canada?
No. The United States and Canada are outside the current list of supported account-opening countries.
