Trading forex and CFDs carries a high level of risk!

Overview

Founded in Denmark in 1992, Saxo has developed into a large multi-asset broker and investment bank with more than 71,000 tradable instruments. Its headquarters are at Philip Heymans Allé 15, 2900 Hellerup, Denmark.

Saxo is difficult to judge as a typical forex broker because forex is only one part of the account. Clients can combine currencies and CFDs with direct investments in stocks, ETFs, bonds and funds, as well as listed options and futures. For traders who regularly move between asset classes, having those markets under one account is a genuine advantage.

The platform setup follows the same logic. SaxoInvestor strips away much of the complexity for traditional investors, while SaxoTrader is built for clients who need detailed charts, derivatives tools and closer control over margin. Beginners can therefore avoid much of the professional trading interface until they actually need it.

The weaker side of Saxo becomes clear when costs are examined beyond headline commissions. International investors can face currency conversion and custody charges, while leveraged traders need to account for overnight financing and market data costs. Saxo becomes more attractive as account size and activity increase, but smaller investors should calculate the total cost rather than focus only on the advertised entry price.

Pros

  • More than 7,400 ETFs/ETNs and 5,200 bonds
  • Strong proprietary platforms for both investors and active traders
  • No minimum initial funding for the Classic account
  • Strong regulatory structure
  • No inactivity fee

Cons

  • Currency conversion and custody costs can weaken the value for smaller international portfolios
  • No direct fractional stock or ETF investing
  • SaxoTrader can be unnecessarily dense for occasional investors
  • No native retail copy trading marketplace
  • No dedicated Islamic swap-free account
  • No native retail VPS

How we test Brokers ?

Trust and Safety

5/5

Saxo has a strong regulatory profile, but client protection depends on the legal entity holding the account. Protection available to a Danish client is not automatically the same as protection available to a UK or Singapore client.

Saxo Bank A/S is a licensed Danish bank supervised by the Danish Financial Supervisory Authority under banking license number 1149. Eligible cash deposits held with Saxo Bank A/S and certain covered branches can be protected up to EUR 100,000 per depositor under the Danish Depositor and Investor Guarantee Scheme.

Financial instruments are treated separately. Shares, bonds and similar assets are normally held as client property and should be returned if the bank fails. If eligible instruments cannot be returned, compensation can apply up to EUR 20,000. These limits do not cover normal investment or trading losses.

UK clients use Saxo Capital Markets UK Ltd, which is authorized and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority under Firm Reference Number 551422. Client money and assets are kept separately under FCA Client Money and Assets rules.

Eligible UK clients can also fall under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Saxo's UK disclosures state protection of up to £120,000 per person per firm for eligible cash deposit claims and up to £85,000 for eligible protected investment business. These protections do not insure clients against losses caused by market movements.

Protection Limit Main Condition
Danish eligible cash deposits Up to EUR 100,000 Applies to eligible clients of Saxo Bank A/S and covered branches
Danish eligible financial instruments Up to EUR 20,000 Applies if eligible instruments cannot be returned
UK eligible cash claims Up to £120,000 Subject to FSCS eligibility
UK eligible investment claims Up to £85,000 Does not cover normal market losses

Retail clients also receive negative balance protection on applicable leveraged products. Professional clients give up this safeguard in exchange for higher leverage and other benefits.

Margin is monitored continuously. If margin utilization reaches 100%, Saxo can begin closing positions and canceling open orders, so leveraged traders should maintain a reasonable margin buffer.

Fees and Commissions

3.64/5

Spreads

Forex pricing uses floating spreads, so costs move with liquidity and volatility. EUR/USD is advertised from 0.7 pips in the UK and GBP/USD from 0.8 pips, while our calculated weighted average spreads are 0.9 and 1.3 pips respectively.

The minimum figure is mainly useful for comparing the broker's best possible pricing. It is not a realistic assumption for every trade. Spreads can be wider around economic releases, market openings and less liquid trading periods.

Commission

Direct investments use a tiered commission structure. The difference between Classic and VIP is modest for an occasional trade but becomes more meaningful for a large or active portfolio.

Product Classic Platinum VIP
UK stocks and ETFs 0.08% 0.05% 0.03%
Bonds 0.20% 0.10% 0.05%
Stock options $2 $1 $0.75

Saxo's commissions are competitive enough to make the account attractive for active investors. The problem is that commission is not the whole cost. Currency conversion and custody can matter more than the dealing fee for someone gradually building an overseas portfolio.

Currency Conversion Fee

A currency conversion fee can apply when a trade is made in a currency different from the account currency. Rates vary by account tier and Saxo entity, with higher tiers generally receiving better conversion pricing.

This cost matters most to international investors who regularly trade assets in several currencies. Eligible clients can use currency sub-accounts in supported regions to reduce repeated conversions.

Inactivity Fee

There is no inactivity fee. Long-term investors can leave positions untouched without facing a penalty simply because the account has not traded recently.

Overnight Swap and Financing Fees

Leveraged positions can create financing costs when held overnight. Forex positions use Tom/Next swap adjustments, while CFDs can receive debit or credit financing charges.

For day traders, this may be a secondary cost. For swing traders, holding a leveraged position for days or weeks can make financing a significant part of the total result.

Custody Fees

Custody fees can apply to assets such as stocks, ETFs and bonds, depending on the client's country, account tier and Saxo entity. Higher account tiers can receive lower rates in some regions.

These charges deserve attention because they are ongoing rather than one-time trading costs. Long-term investors should therefore compare custody, currency conversion and commission together when assessing Saxo's overall pricing.

Deposits and Withdrawals

3.7/5

Deposit Methods

Saxo allows clients to fund their accounts through methods such as wire transfer, SEPA, SWIFT, Visa, Mastercard and Maestro. Bank transfers are generally more suitable for larger deposits, while card funding can be more convenient when faster access to funds is important. The exact methods available depend on the client's country and account setup.

Saxo does not normally charge for standard bank-transfer deposits, although external bank, card-provider or intermediary fees can still apply. Card funding costs and availability vary by region, so clients should check the terms that apply to their local Saxo entity before making a deposit.

Withdrawal Methods

Saxo handles withdrawals through bank-based methods, including wire transfer, SEPA and SWIFT. Funds normally need to be sent to a verified bank account held in the client's own name, which adds an extra layer of security but can make the process less flexible than brokers that return funds directly to cards or e-wallets.

Saxo does not charge a standard cash withdrawal fee, although intermediary or correspondent banks can still deduct their own charges, particularly on international transfers. For most clients, local or SEPA withdrawals will be the simplest option, while SWIFT is more relevant for cross-border payments.

Deposit Processing Time

Deposit speed depends mainly on the funding method. Debit card payments and Instant Funding are usually credited immediately, making them the most practical choices when money needs to reach the account quickly. Domestic bank transfers typically take 1 to 2 business days, while international transfers can take 2 to 5 business days because additional banks and currency processing may be involved.

For routine account funding, the processing times are reasonable. The main drawback is that international bank transfers are less suitable when a trader needs to add margin at short notice.

Withdrawal Processing Time

Withdrawal times depend on when the request is submitted and where the money is being sent. Domestic withdrawals requested before 14:00 CET are generally processed on a T+1 basis, while requests made after the cutoff move to T+2. International withdrawals can take longer because intermediary banks and cross-border processing may be involved.

A full account withdrawal can require up to 3 additional business days. Clients should also remember that proceeds from recently sold investments must settle before they become available for withdrawal, so the total wait can be longer after closing a position.

Tradable Instruments

5/5

Stocks

Saxo provides access to more than 23,000 stocks across around 50 global markets, including major exchanges in North America, Europe and Asia. This is a strong range for investors who want to own international shares rather than rely mainly on stock CFDs.

Trading costs vary by market, account tier and country of residence. Fractional share availability is also limited, while currency conversion and custody charges can make frequent small international purchases less attractive.

ETFs

The ETF selection covers more than 7,400 products across over 30 exchanges, with exposure to broad indices, sectors and investment themes. Screeners, research tools and portfolio analysis make the large selection easier to navigate.

Availability depends on jurisdiction. Regulatory rules can prevent some retail clients from buying certain foreign ETFs, and fractional or recurring investment features are not available in every country. Saxo is therefore better suited to investors making reasonably sized ETF purchases than those focused on very small automated investments.

Bonds

More than 5,200 government and corporate bonds can be traded online. Saxo's bond execution is particularly notable because orders can enter an auction where up to 40 liquidity providers compete to return a price.

Minimum trade sizes vary considerably between bonds, and custody or transaction costs can apply. The range is strongest for investors with enough capital to build a meaningful fixed-income portfolio rather than those making very small bond purchases.

Funds

Mutual fund availability varies significantly by country, but Saxo provides access to a broad selection of professionally managed funds in supported markets. Investors can generally use exact cash amounts rather than buying whole units.

Funds are better suited to long-term portfolio building than active trading. Saxo's advanced charting and order tools therefore matter less here than they do with stocks, forex or derivatives.

Forex Pairs

Forex remains one of Saxo's core trading markets, with more than 185 FX pairs covering major, minor and exotic currencies. More than 45 FX options and forex forwards extend the range beyond ordinary spot trading.

SaxoTrader adds advanced charts, margin monitoring and multiple order types, while TradingView and MultiCharts can be used by traders who prefer third-party tools. Spreads, leverage and margin requirements vary by country and client classification, so local trading conditions should be checked before opening a position.

The forex offering is particularly attractive to traders who also use stocks, options, futures or other markets. Traders interested only in a few major currency pairs may not need the full depth of the Saxo platform.

Listed Options

Listed options are available across more than 20 exchanges in the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific. SaxoTrader includes an option chain, Greeks, implied volatility data and tools for building multi-leg strategies.

This is a capable setup for experienced derivatives traders, but the learning curve is significant. Beginners need to understand volatility, assignment risk and potential losses before using more complex options strategies.

Futures

More than 250 futures contracts across over 25 exchanges cover markets such as equity indices, energy, metals, currencies and interest rates.

The main advantage is integration. Futures can be monitored alongside forex, options and other positions within the same account. Since futures use margin, however, contract size and rapid price movements make careful risk management essential.

CFDs

CFDs provide leveraged long and short exposure to markets including stocks, ETFs, indices, forex and commodities. SaxoTrader makes it easy to monitor margin and overall exposure alongside other positions.

The available leverage, margin requirements and regulatory protections differ between jurisdictions.

Commodities

Commodity exposure is available through several structures, including CFDs, futures, options, ETCs, spot metals and commodity-related shares. Markets include precious metals, energy and agriculture.

This flexibility is useful because short-term traders and long-term investors can choose different ways to gain exposure. The trade-off is complexity, as financing, expiry dates, leverage and other conditions differ between product types.

Trading Platforms and Tools

4.45/5

SaxoInvestor

SaxoInvestor is the better platform for clients who mainly buy stocks, ETFs, funds and bonds. The layout puts portfolio information, research and investment discovery ahead of complex derivatives controls.

That distinction matters. Many brokers claim to be beginner-friendly by removing useful information. SaxoInvestor takes a better approach by simplifying the interface without turning it into a bare buy-and-sell screen.

Its main weakness is that occasional investors may still be paying Saxo's broader cost structure for technology they barely use. Someone buying one ETF each month may not gain much from the broker's sophisticated market infrastructure.

SaxoTrader

SaxoTrader is the stronger product for serious trading. More than 85 technical indicators, advanced charts, risk monitoring, several order types and broad derivatives access make it capable enough for complex multi-asset portfolios.

Its density is also a weakness. A new investor opening the platform simply to buy a few shares may find much of the information unnecessary. SaxoInvestor is the more sensible starting point in that situation.

Experienced traders, on the other hand, are unlikely to outgrow SaxoTrader quickly. Options, futures, forex and CFDs can all be managed without moving to a completely different terminal.

API and Third-party Tools

OpenAPI allows developers and advanced clients to connect trading, account and portfolio functions to their own applications. FIX API targets more professional and institutional workflows.

Integrations with TradingView and MultiCharts give discretionary and systematic traders another route into the account. This is a meaningful advantage for clients who like Saxo's execution and market access but prefer a different charting environment.

VPS and Automated Trading

Saxo does not provide a built-in retail VPS. Traders running automated systems continuously need to arrange their own hosting.

For casual algorithmic experimentation, that may not matter. For a trader specifically looking for an MT4-style broker package with a sponsored VPS and ready-made Expert Advisor ecosystem, Saxo is not the natural choice.

Mobile Trading

Android and iOS applications cover market monitoring, order placement and position management. They work well as extensions of the web and desktop platforms rather than simplified companion apps.

Complex options or multi-position analysis is still easier on a larger screen, but routine account management does not require returning to a desktop computer.

Account Opening and Fees

3.83/5

Classic Account

Classic is Saxo's standard account type and the starting point for most individual clients. There is no minimum deposit on Saxo's general individual account offering, although local requirements can vary by country. Clients receive access to the main trading platforms, available markets and standard pricing.

Platinum Account

Platinum is aimed at larger or more active clients. Saxo's international account structure uses a minimum deposit of EUR 200,000 as a reference threshold, although the exact amount varies by country. Clients can also qualify through sufficient trading activity.

The main benefits are lower trading costs and priority support, making Platinum more relevant to frequent traders and investors with larger portfolios.

VIP Account

The international reference minimum deposit is EUR 1,000,000, but local thresholds can differ. Active clients may also qualify through trading activity rather than deposit size alone.

VIP provides Saxo's best standard pricing, priority service and additional access to trading experts and selected events. It is mainly designed for high-value or very active clients.

Account Minimum Deposit Main Benefits Best For
Classic No minimum deposit Standard pricing, platforms and account support Most individual investors and traders
Platinum EUR 200,000 Lower prices and priority support Larger portfolios and frequent traders
VIP EUR 1,000,000 Best standard pricing, priority service and additional expert access High-value and highly active clients

The account types mainly change pricing and service rather than market access. Minimum deposit requirements and qualification rules can differ between Saxo entities, so clients should check the conditions that apply in their country of residence.

Other Account Structures

Depending on residence and eligibility, Saxo also has individual, joint, corporate, professional and demo accounts. UK clients can also access structures such as a Stocks and Shares ISA, SIPP and trust account.

A dedicated Islamic swap-free account is not available.

Account Opening Process

  1. Complete the online application
  2. Provide citizenship and tax information
  3. Submit accepted proof of identity
  4. Provide proof of residence when required
  5. Complete KYC and security checks
  6. Fund the account after approval

Customer Support

2.78/5

Customer support is available 24/5, matching the weekday trading cycle of the global markets Saxo covers. Clients can use the help center, in-platform support and telephone assistance.

English, Danish, French, Dutch, Italian, Polish, German, Czech, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Portuguese are among the support languages.

The service model is noticeably tiered. Platinum clients receive priority support, while VIP clients can receive more personal assistance. That is good for large accounts but also means the most hands-on service is not part of the ordinary Classic experience.

Market Research

4.5/5

Research is one of the better reasons to use Saxo instead of a low-cost execution-only app. Daily commentary, economic information, podcasts, webinars and analysis from Saxo's strategy team sit alongside the instruments being traded.

For investors, selected FactSet analyst data and other fundamental research tools make it easier to investigate securities without constantly moving between external websites. Active traders can use Trade Signals and technical tools for shorter-term setups.

The strength is breadth rather than a single standout feature. A client following interest rates, currencies, equities and commodities can get relevant material across those markets from the same environment.

There is still an important distinction between research and advice. Saxo operates on an execution-only basis, so the analysis is there to inform a self-directed decision rather than tell a client what should be bought or sold.

Learn

4.5/5

Saxo's education offering goes beyond basic platform documentation. Beginners can find structured courses, guides and videos covering financial instruments, trading concepts, leverage, margin and risk management. The material is useful for learning how markets work before moving into more complex products.

Platform tutorials are especially helpful because SaxoTrader can feel dense at first. Video guides explain practical tasks such as placing orders, managing positions and using analysis tools, which makes the learning curve easier to handle.

More experienced traders can move into webinars, podcasts and material on options, technical analysis and trading strategies. Risk education is also given proper attention, which matters on a platform that provides access to leveraged products such as CFDs, futures and options.

The 20-day demo account adds a practical side to the education package, with $100,000 in simulated funds available for platform practice. It is useful for learning the interface and testing order types, although the limited duration makes it better as a platform trial than a long-term training environment.

Overall, Saxo does more than simply explain where different buttons are located. Education can help a motivated beginner build a solid foundation, but it does not replace the experience needed to trade leveraged or complex products responsibly.

Bonuses and Promotions

3/5

Deposit Bonus

A traditional cash deposit-matching bonus is not part of Saxo's standard retail model. That fits the broker's overall positioning, which relies more on pricing tiers and platform quality than aggressive promotional offers.

No-deposit Bonus

There is no regular withdrawable no-deposit bonus. The $100,000 demo balance is simulated money and cannot be withdrawn.

Welcome Bonus

Saxo does not normally use a cash welcome bonus. Temporary commission-credit campaigns can appear under separate terms, but these are different from receiving withdrawable money for opening an account.

Refer a Friend

Saxo runs a referral program in selected regions. Existing clients can invite friends through a personal referral link, and successful referrals may receive commission credits or other rewards after opening and funding an account.

The reward amount, funding conditions and eligibility rules vary by country. Commission credits are generally used to reimburse eligible trading commissions rather than being withdrawn as cash, and they normally have an expiry period.

Affiliate Program

Saxo also has an affiliate program for established publishers, financial websites, influencers and lead-generation businesses. Approved partners receive tracking links and can earn commissions for referring new clients.

Payments depend on factors such as the referred client's account type and the applicable regional program. Applicants are expected to have a relevant online presence, suitable financial content and an engaged audience.

Saxo Rewards

Saxo Rewards is a loyalty program that allows eligible clients to earn points through qualifying funding and trading activity. Accumulating enough points can move an account from Classic to Platinum or VIP, bringing lower pricing and higher service levels.

The number of points required and the activities that qualify can vary by country. The program is therefore more useful as an ongoing benefit for active clients than as a one-time promotion.

Trading Contests

Real-money trading contests are not a central part of Saxo's offering. Its promotional approach focuses more on referrals, loyalty rewards, account-tier benefits and occasional regional campaigns.

Final Verdict

Saxo is strongest when the account is used for what it was built to do: combine international investing and active multi-asset trading in one well-developed environment.

The product range is genuinely impressive. More than 23,000 stocks, over 7,400 ETFs and ETNs, more than 5,200 bonds, over 185 FX pairs and substantial futures and options access give clients much more room to grow than a basic forex or CFD broker.

The platforms reinforce that advantage. SaxoInvestor is approachable enough for traditional investing, while SaxoTrader provides the depth needed for derivatives, margin trading and active portfolio management.

The main weakness is pricing for smaller international investors. A 0.08% commission looks inexpensive in isolation, but currency conversion and recurring custody charges can make the overall account less competitive for someone regularly investing modest sums abroad. The lack of direct fractional stock and ETF investing also makes Saxo less convenient for small monthly portfolios.

Complexity is the second drawback. SaxoTrader is powerful, but a beginner who buys one or two ETFs a month does not need most of what it can do. The broker makes more sense as account size, trading activity or product complexity increases.

FAQ

Is Saxo a safe broker?

Saxo operates through regulated legal entities, including Saxo Bank A/S in Denmark and FCA-regulated Saxo Capital Markets UK Ltd in the United Kingdom. Client protection depends on the legal entity holding the account. Danish and UK compensation limits are not universal Saxo-wide guarantees, and none of the schemes protects clients from ordinary market losses.

What is the minimum deposit at Saxo?

The Classic account type has no minimum initial funding requirement. Higher pricing tiers require substantially more capital or enough qualifying trading activity.

What markets can be traded with Saxo?

A Saxo account can provide access to stocks, ETFs, bonds, mutual funds, forex, options, futures, CFDs and commodities. The exact selection depends on the client's country and account permissions.

Does Saxo have a demo account?

Yes. The demo account lasts 20 days and provides $100,000 in simulated funds. It is useful for learning the platform, although the limited duration makes it better as a test account than a long-term trading simulator.
