Overview
Interactive Brokers has been around since 1977, but it does not feel like an old-fashioned broker. From its headquarters in Greenwich, Connecticut, the firm has built a direct-access service for traders who want to reach many markets from one account. Its parent company trades on Nasdaq under the ticker IBKR and entered the S&P 500 on August 28, 2025.
The attraction is easy to understand: broad market access, low trading costs, serious order controls, and strong API tools. The harder part is choosing the right platform and account settings. IBKR Desktop, Client Portal, and GlobalTrader are manageable starting points, while Trader Workstation is better suited to users who already know what they need. Small forex accounts also need to pay attention to the relatively large minimum order sizes.

How we test Brokers ?
Trust and Safety
Interactive Brokers is regulated through several regional legal entities, including authorities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia, and Japan. The protection available to a client depends on the entity assigned to the account, because compensation schemes, leverage limits, product access, and negative balance rules differ by jurisdiction. Client assets are generally kept separate from the broker's own funds, while account security includes two-factor authentication, encrypted connections, and real-time risk monitoring. Traders should also understand that IBKR can liquidate positions when margin requirements are not met, and negative balance protection does not apply to every account or product.
Fees and Commissions
Spreads
Spreads change throughout the trading day. Liquidity, session, order size, and volatility all affect the price, so the weighted average spreads below are better used as a guide than as a promise.
For spot forex, IBKR combines quotes from 17 major dealers. Published spreads start at 0.1 pip, then commission is charged separately.
Trading commissions
Interactive Brokers uses different commission structures based on the product, market, and pricing plan. IBKR Lite charges $0 commission on eligible US-listed stocks and ETFs, while IBKR Pro is designed for active traders and uses fixed or tiered pricing. Under the fixed plan, US stock commissions can start at $0.005 per share, with a $1 minimum per order. Mutual fund trades generally cost about $14.95 or up to 3% of the transaction value. Commissions for international stocks, bonds, options, futures, and other instruments vary by exchange, order size, and selected pricing model.
Currency conversion fees
Manual spot forex conversion starts at 0.20 basis points of trade value, with a $2 minimum at the first volume tier. Heavy users receive lower rates, reaching 0.08 basis points with a $1 minimum at higher monthly volumes. Automatic conversion works differently: instead of a separate commission, IBKR adjusts the exchange rate by 0.03%.
Overnight financing and margin interest
Borrowed cash is where costs can build quietly. IBKR Pro margin loan rates start at benchmark plus 1.5%, while rates for IBKR Lite start at benchmark plus 2.5%. Larger qualifying balances receive lower rates. Forex rollover follows the interest difference between the two currencies, and leveraged CFDs or other financed positions can also create overnight charges.
Non-trading fees
Interactive Brokers does not charge a standard inactivity fee or a general account maintenance fee. Deposits are usually free on the broker's side, although banks and payment providers may apply their own charges. Withdrawal fees depend on the selected method and the number of withdrawals made during the month. Other possible non-trading costs include market data subscriptions, currency conversion fees, interest on negative cash balances, and charges for optional services or special account activity.
Deposits and Withdrawals
Deposit methods
Interactive Brokers accepts deposits through ACH Transfer, SEPA, bank wire, SWIFT, Wise, and eligible stablecoin transfers. The methods shown in an account depend on the client's country, legal entity, account currency, and linked bank. Deposits should normally come from an account held in the same name as the brokerage account, as most third-party payments are not accepted. Processing time and any bank-side charges vary by method.
Withdrawal methods
Interactive Brokers allows withdrawals through ACH Transfer, SEPA, bank wire, SWIFT, stablecoin trasfers, and Wise. The available methods depend on the client's country, legal entity, account currency, and saved banking instructions. Withdrawals are normally sent to an account held in the same name as the brokerage account, and processing times can vary because of security checks, bank reviews, holidays, or correspondent bank delays.

Tradable Instruments
Stocks and ETFs
Shares and ETFs are a natural fit for this broker. Traders can reach markets across North America, Europe, Asia, and other regions, with fractional trading on eligible securities. Short selling, extended-hours dealing, scanners, smart routing, direct exchange routing, and advanced orders give active users plenty of control without forcing long-term investors into complex tools.
Portfolio Margin is aimed at larger, experienced accounts. It starts with a $110,000 equity requirement, and the account returns to Reg T treatment if equity falls below $100,000.
Forex pairs
FXTrader gives access to more than 100 pairs across 28 currencies. Streaming quotes, order flow, positions, average price, and profit and loss sit in the same workspace. The setup feels closer to an institutional dealing screen than a typical beginner forex app, and the 20,000 or 25,000 unit minimums on several major currencies reinforce that point.
Options
Options are one of the strongest parts of the platform. Stock, index, and futures options can be combined into multi-leg strategies, while OptionTrader, Strategy Builder, Probability Lab, Volatility Lab, conditional orders, and risk analytics help traders examine a position before placing it. Access depends on the applicant's experience, finances, and risk profile.
Futures
The futures range covers equity indexes, interest rates, currencies, energy, metals, and agriculture, along with futures options. Margin changes by exchange, contract, volatility, account type, and even time of day, so the required amount should be checked before every trade rather than assumed from an earlier session.
Bonds, funds, and structured products
Fixed-income traders can screen government, corporate, and municipal bonds as well as certificates of deposit. Mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, warrants, and structured products add further choice. Bond Scanner makes it easier to compare yield, maturity, rating, and price, while complex products remain limited to clients who pass the relevant knowledge and eligibility checks.
Commodities and metals
There is no single commodity account type. Exposure comes through futures, options, ETFs, and eligible spot metals, so the trading experience depends on the product structure, venue, order size, and market conditions.
CFDs
CFDs are available only to eligible clients outside the United States. Depending on the region, the account can include share, index, and forex CFDs. Local regulation sets the leverage cap and decides whether negative balance protection applies.
Cryptocurrency and prediction markets
Cryptocurrency trading sits inside the IBKR account through third-party custodians, which removes the need to open a separate exchange account. The available tokens, custody arrangements, and wallet transfer options still depend on the provider and the client's region.
Eligible accounts can also trade exchange-listed forecast and event contracts in approved markets.
Trading restrictions and style
IBKR does not block common active trading styles such as hedging, scalping, or news trading. The meaningful restrictions come from regulation and account status. US margin accounts that are subject to pattern day trading rules need $25,000 for unrestricted day trading, and Level 2 data can require a paid subscription.
Trading Platforms and Tools
4.9/5
Trader Workstation
Trader Workstation, usually called TWS, is the platform that built IBKR's professional reputation. It brings together more than 100 order types and algorithms, market depth, scanners, charts, Risk Navigator, options analytics, basket trading, hotkeys, and smart routing. Experienced traders can shape almost every part of an order, but new users can spend more time learning the interface than placing the first trade.
IBKR Desktop
IBKR Desktop is the better middle ground. It keeps the most useful professional features but presents them in a cleaner workspace, making it a sensible choice for traders who have outgrown a basic app but do not need the full weight of TWS.
Client Portal
Client Portal works well for routine tasks that do not justify opening a desktop platform. A browser is enough to place simpler trades, review the portfolio, transfer funds, open reports, view tax documents, change settings, read research, and contact support.
IBKR Mobile
IBKR Mobile carries much of the advanced platform onto iOS and Android. Multi-asset trading, complex orders, watchlists, charts, options tools, account monitoring, and secure login are all available. The trade-off is a dense menu structure, especially on a smaller phone.
IBKR GlobalTrader
GlobalTrader removes much of that complexity. It is designed for beginner and intermediate investors who want a simpler route to more than 90 stock markets, ETFs, options, forecast contracts, and selected cryptocurrencies.
API trading
For developers, the broker becomes more than a trading screen. TWS API, Client Portal Web API, and institutional FIX connectivity can automate strategies, order handling, account monitoring, market data, and multi-account allocation. TWS API works with Python, Java, C++, and C#. There is no separate API platform fee, although market data charges and normal commissions still apply.
Paper trading, copy trading, and VPS
The paper account begins with $1,000,000 in simulated equity. That is useful for learning the platform, checking how an order behaves, and testing an API connection without risking real money.
Copy trading and VPS hosting are not built into the broker in the usual retail sense. Automated allocation needs an API, an advisor structure, or compatible third-party software, and that software can run on an external VPS.
Platform time zone
There is no single IBKR server time that governs every screen and order. TWS can show the computer's local time or another selected zone, while exchange orders and API instructions can use exchange time, UTC, or an explicitly stated zone. Eastern Time is still important for United States markets, support hours, and some account deadlines.
Account Opening and Fees
The application is fully online, but it is more detailed than opening a simple investing app. IBKR asks enough questions to match the account with the correct legal entity, tax status, products, and risk permissions.
Account types
Cash, margin, and Portfolio Margin Accounts
Account opening process
The Interactive Brokers account opening process is completed online. Applicants choose an account type, enter personal, tax, employment, financial, and trading experience details, and select the required base currency and trading permissions. Identity and address documents must then be uploaded for verification. Approval time depends on the applicant's country, account structure, document quality, and any additional compliance review. Once approved, access to specific products still depends on the client's experience, financial profile, and available cash or margin.
Customer Support
Interactive Brokers provides customer support by phone, live chat, secure messages through the Message Center, IBot, FAQs, and a client forum. Support is generally available 24 hours a day during the trading week, although channel and regional availability can differ. Service is offered in several languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Trading and platform questions are usually handled faster than funding, verification, tax, or compliance cases, which may require additional account review.
Market Research
Interactive Brokers gives clients access to a broad range of market research tools, including company fundamentals, analyst ratings, news, economic data, market scanners, and technical analysis. Fundamentals Explorer covers more than 30,000 companies and includes over 300 data points per company, while research feeds draw from more than 80 news and report sources and over 5,500 TipRanks analyst ratings. Some research is available free of charge, but premium providers and real-time exchange data may require a separate subscription. Beginners may find it easier to focus on a few tools that match their trading strategy rather than using the full research library at once.
Learn
Interactive Brokers provides educational content through IBKR Campus, which combines platform tutorials, trading courses, webinars, market commentary, coding lessons, and practical exercises. Traders can use the material to learn about stocks, options, futures, forex, bonds, portfolio management, and the broker's trading tools. A free trial and paper trading account also allow users to practice with simulated funds before trading with real money. Most trial market quotes are delayed by 10 to 15 minutes, except for OTC spot forex and OTC spot metals.
Bonuses and Promotions
Deposit bonus
A standard cash reward is not paid simply for adding money to the account.
No-deposit bonus
The trial balance is simulated and cannot be withdrawn, so it is not a no-deposit cash bonus.
Welcome bonus
The nearest equivalent to a welcome offer is the stock award for eligible referred clients. The conditions are shown in the Refer a Friend table below.
Refer a Friend program
A referrer can make up to 15 referrals in one year and 30 in total. The main program excludes residents of Japan, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Poland, mainland China, and Israel. Canadian referrers can still receive the $200 payment, but referred Canadian clients do not receive IBKR shares.
Affiliate program
Finance and trading publishers can apply to the Influencer Program or the cost-per-click Publisher Program. Initial campaigns last 30 to 90 days, performance is reviewed monthly, invoices use net 30-day terms, and successful arrangements can continue for up to 3 quarters. Payment is agreed case by case.
Partners based in Chile, China, Israel, Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Portugal, or Spain are not eligible.
Loyalty program
There is no points card or tiered loyalty club. Interest on eligible cash and the Stock Yield Enhancement Program are account features, not promotional rewards.
Trading contests
Most competitions are linked to the Student Trading Lab or education partners. Participants use paper accounts with market-based pricing, so these events function as learning exercises rather than regular cash contests for retail traders.
Final Verdict
Interactive Brokers earns its reputation through depth rather than simplicity. It is especially strong for active traders, global investors, options and futures users, portfolio managers, and developers who want broad markets, efficient execution, detailed risk controls, and competitive pricing in one account.
That depth comes with a real learning curve. Beginners should start with a cash account, paper trading, and one of the simpler platforms before moving to TWS, leverage, or complex derivatives. Traders with very small forex accounts, or those who mainly want social and copy trading features, are likely to find a more comfortable fit elsewhere.
FAQ
Is Interactive Brokers safe?
IBKR operates through several regulated regional entities and uses client asset segregation and two-factor authentication. The exact compensation scheme depends on the account entity, and these protections do not cover normal trading losses.
Does Interactive Brokers offer forex trading?
Yes. The forex range covers more than 100 pairs across 28 currencies with commission-based pricing. Several major currencies have minimum orders of 20,000 or 25,000 units.
Is Interactive Brokers good for beginners?
It can be, provided the beginner starts with IBKR Desktop, Client Portal, GlobalTrader, paper trading, and Traders' Academy. TWS makes more sense after the basic order and risk controls are familiar.
Does Interactive Brokers offer copy trading or an Islamic account?
No native retail copy network or dedicated Islamic account is built into the service. API and third-party allocation arrangements are separate from a normal social trading platform.
